Animal Kingdom and Evening Extra Magic Hour

The Animal Kingdom is a park seen by many as a just a one day visit, maybe even just half a day. However, there’s more to this park than people realize if they’d take the time to enjoy it, relax, and take in all of the detail and story this park has to offer. That means visiting not only in the daytime, but at night as well. On certain nights when the park closes to regular guests it opens back up to those staying on property and guests have an extra three hours of time to explore. We find this time at the Animal Kingdom is very well spent getting in all those rides that guests find themselves running to and from during the day. Take in these big ticket attractions during an evening Extra Magic Hour (EMH) and then visit during the day later in your trip to savor the animals, detail, and slower pace this park has to offer during the daytime. The following attractions are open during evening EMH at the Animal Kingdom:

Primeval Whirl

Triceratop Spin

Expedition Everest

Kali River Rapids

It’s Tough to be a Bug!

Festival of the Lion King

As mentioned before, seeing this park lit up at night is also a plus for visiting during evening EMH. Expedition Everest is beautiful glowing against the nighttime sky.

Anandapur, Asia

Expedition Everest, the forbidden mountain, is located at the end of the fictional village of Anandapur in the Asia area of the Animal Kingdom.  Anandapur may be a fictional town, but it has its own Disney history.  Established in 1544 first as a royal hunting preserve, the village grew and currently the royal family of today has turned the preserve, which has decayed over the years, into a conservation area.  While in Anadapur you can visit Kali River Rapids and see the devastation that illegal logging can create in nature, or take a stroll through the Maharajah Jungle Trek to view wild and exotic animals as well as see ruins of the original royal hunting grounds.

Animal Kingdom at Night?

Visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom at night might sound a bit odd since the main attraction of the park are the animals and you aren’t going to see many of those in the dark.  However, there is something special about seeing the park and it’s major attractions lit up in the night.  Expedition Everest is just one example. The mountain is not actually a recreation of Everest but rather a fictional forbidden mountain created by Disney Imagineers.  Mount Everest is shown as the peak to the right, showing us that Everest is located far off in the distance past our forbidden mountain.

Everest Detail

The standby line for Expedition Everest is worth the wait.  In fact, there are times when you might think the line is moving too fast for you to take in all of the detail around you.  Next time, skip that Fastpass line and enjoy the detail that the Imagineers worked so hard to create.

I decided to start off with one of my favorites.  This first photo was taken back in August of 2008 and was included in the new 2010 Passporter’s Walt Disney World guide. (click images for larger version)

Beware of the Yeti - August 2008

On our most recent trip this past November, we noticed that the old sign had weathered away and had been replaced by the townspeople.
